This was the first piece of the series to be completed. The guitar silhouette was drawn from a Telecaster guitar that Horace owned at the time. Muddy Waters famously used a pillar-box red Telecaster for the latter part of his career. The Fender logo came from an old bass combo, the amplifier of which Horace still uses. After the 'second stage' print was done he added some record labels, which he then painted, and text. Around the outline of the guitar is a list of the many musicians associated with Muddy Waters. This list is continued in white pencil at the base of the picture. Muddy Waters always encouraged younger musicians, often including them in his line-up over the years, hence the long list. His band was the nearest Chicago Blues got to a finishing school.
